Olympus XA series repair
Shutter won't fire or fires unreliably
The XA's electronic shutter is held by two small release magnets. Dirt, old lubricant or a sticky set spring stops it releasing.
Common symptoms
- Pressing the shutter button does nothing, even with fresh batteries
- The shutter fires sometimes but not every time
- Shutter speeds that seem too fast or too slow
What I do
Cleaning the release magnets and the shutter mechanism usually brings it back. Afterwards I check the shutter fires reliably and adjust shutter speeds where needed.
A small number of non-firing shutters trace back to a failed integrated circuit (IC) chip, often damaged by leaking batteries. IC faults can't be repaired, and replacement chips aren't made.
